I utilize collaborative, client-centred, and empowerment-based lenses to create this space for you as a client. I aim to individualize the therapeutic space to meet your personal goals, which means you have the freedom to decide to take what is helpful from sessions and leave what is unhelpful. The more you share with me about what is working and what is not, the better we can collaborate to find approaches that best suit your needs. The analogy I like to use is that you are the driver, and I am the navigator: I offer options for directions to turn, but in the end, you get to choose which turns you want to take.
In the therapy room, I lean towards a gentle and honest approach with a focus on client autonomy and empowerment. I always like to invite clients to share feedback on what is working and where we could improve together. Alongside a key focus on therapeutic relationships, I utilize several modalities and lenses to support you in your mental health journey, including strength-based, solution-focused, and cognitive behavioural techniques. One specific area of passion I have is offering grief support. Grief is not solely death-related but rather loss-related. The lack of understanding of the vast experiences of grief in the Western culture leaves many feeling alone and confused when they experience loss, not understanding what their body/mind is going through. Whether you have experienced a death-related loss or a non-death-related loss (eg. Relationship breakdown, major life change, loss of safety, etc.), I can create space for you to share and feel your experience. I am also trained to offer the Grief Recovery Method if you would prefer a more structured program of healing unresolved grief. I don’t believe grief is a pathology/illness to get over, and not every grieving person needs professional support; however, if you are feeling stuck or don’t have others to witness your grief, inviting someone on that journey may be helpful.
There wasn’t always space made for my emotions growing up, and my parents didn’t have the tools themselves. I want to reduce that experience in the world by creating a space where emotions are welcome and people have the opportunity to find connection and belonging during their hurt. I am also passionate about encouraging self-compassion in those I work with because of the amazing difference the practice/skill of self-compassion has made in my life.
