My approach to therapy is to not be a dispassionate third party, but to ride front seat in your journey. While I may have some things to share or point out during this journey, ultimately the decisions and direction will come from you. To that end, checking in on the work we do together in session, and what happens between them will provide the opportunities for our next steps. From successes, failures, what worked and the barriers are all of value. You will notice the process and experiences being emphasized and highlighted, rather than rushing towards the end. This'll often mean slowing down including checking in on the physical, emotional and mental experiences.
My philosophy of therapy aims to increase the capacity to ride the waves when things go south or our circumstances challenge us. The goal is not to make the right choice but to make the best of our choices. Part of being the best version of ourselves is that we continue to aspire despite the constantly changing challenges from the world, others and ourselves. Therapy would ideally be a reflection of our lives and values. It can feel messy and confusing sometimes but with the sense of direction that you would like to move towards. We are all walking contradictions and part of our work is that we'll navigate the uncertainty together. Working with myself involves examining the function and goals that motivate our decisions and patterns. However it shows up, we'll get the opportunity to hold it up with non-judgement and curiosity. This will allow us to take the steps to identify how it is we want to proceed. If holding these thoughts, experiences and reflections are difficult, we could work on increasing our capacity and flexibility to take those next steps.
I find incredible joy and fulfillment in being there for others through collaboratively finding direction. Getting to intimately and openly explore topics and experiences that otherwise would be considered socially taboo helps to build that genuine sense of connection despite the sense of vulnerability. I recognize how powerful community and connection can be even if it is for a short moment.
